For those interested in the more illustrious side of the city, the Museum Willet-Holthuysen is certainly worth a visit. This canal house elegantly reveals the mysteries that lie behind the majestic facade, offering a unique glimpse into the lives of the 17th century’s happy few. In 1895 Mrs Willet-Holthuysen bequeathed her 17th-century canal house to the city of Amsterdam in her will, on the condition that it was preserved and opened as a museum. Her wish has been faithfully observed for over a century - the house has been turned into a beautiful museum. The museum is know for it’s beautiful 18th and 19th century period rooms. The magnificent ballroom, a dining room, a room looking out over the garden and an imposing corridor show you the wealth of the last residents. At the back of the building the garden is laid out in early 18th-century French fashion, transporting you back in time. Wandering through the beautifully decorated ballroom, kitchens and corridors makes you wish the former owners were still around to give you their personal tour.
